Energy transition in Algeria

The Word of the Prime Minister, Mr. Abdelaziz Djerad on the occasion of the publication of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Commission “CEREFE” of its report on the Energy Transition in Algeria -2020-

“Following the profound changes that have marked political life in the country since February 22, 2019, a trajectory that brings hope is being shaped in accordance with the legitimate aspirations of all citizens with a view to building a new, modern and prosperous Algeria. The first roadmap in this regard is rightly drawn up on the basis of the 54 commitments of the President of the Republic, which the people endorsed during the elections of December 12, 2019.

In this perspective, the government's action plan for the implementation of the program of the President of the Republic has immediately placed the energy transition at the heart of the country's development policies, according to "The triptych of an economic renewal based on food security, the energy transition and the digital economy.

Indeed, starting from the country's economic situation, which has so far relied on a non-renewable resource and is heavily subject to fluctuations imposed by the outside world, any program aimed at circumventing such a situation inevitably leads to a complete overhaul of our energy policy.

Being aware that in the long term, any major energy transition primarily targets the Algeria of tomorrow, it should nevertheless serve today as a catalyst for a real start to the upward and sustained development of the nation in all related areas. To do this, it is enough to identify in a calm and rigorous manner all the criteria that can successfully lead to the objective thus outlined. Such a commitment could even be seen as the ultimate duty of the current generation in order to contribute its stone to the building and thus contribute to illuminating the long path of real progress. The latter being underpinned, among other things, by the ambition to carve out a place of choice for the country in the world of tomorrow and this, in accordance with the global vision of the President of the Republic, inspired by the expectations expressed, in a clear and determined manner, by the citizens, given the great potential that the country has.

In this regard, it is undeniable that Algeria, which has a deposit of renewable resources, particularly solar, among the largest in the world, also has a territorial extent that allows it to take full advantage of a forward-looking energy policy. However, these predispositions are far from sufficient in themselves if we do not break with the vicious cycle of chronic dependence on the outside in terms of real mastery of universal knowledge and its applications on the ground, the innovative technical concepts that result from it and finally the organic progress that accompanies them.

As such, the government is determined to do everything possible to establish a sustainable energy model, where efficiency would be the key word.

As a result, any action allowing for increased optimization of internal energy consumption would be encouraged in the same way as that which could contribute to extending the life of our hydrocarbon reserves by diversifying alternative means of energy production, in particular based on renewable resources.

The volumes of gas and oil thus saved could in this case open up new perspectives through an effective expansion of local petrochemical activities whose finished products have real outlets on the international market, which has become too uncertain for primary energy resources in their raw state.
